You know what's not great for creativity...? Patterns and shapes.
So you know what I'm going to show you...?
Shapes. (I know...)
The reality is that shapes and patterns can be useful tools WHEN
you use them carefully and intentionally. It's when you start to
use them as a crutch, or as part of your muscle memory, that they
can have negative effects on your playing. What shapes CAN do
(like the CAGED system), is help you learn intervals and give you
an outline for something that you *know* works. You have to take
a little bit of time to dissect the shape and discover what's
inside before it really becomes rewarding, so that's what we're
going to do today!
