How would you complete this thought? "I wish I was better at
____________. Then I'd be the musician I want to be!" It's
pretty hard to name just one word or phrase to fill in this
blank. Think about all the areas you COULD focus on:
Improvising, learning new songs, phrasing, writing, chord
vocabulary, fretboard mobility... I'm sure you can think of more.
What may not immediately come to mind when filling in your blank
or narrowing down your list of options is that there is a core
skill that will help you improve across all of your musical
goals! Developing your ear.
Developing your ear will universally and exponentially take your
musicianship to a new level. But have you ever looked for an ear
training course? It can actually be quite challenging to find a
good one, as my good friend and fellow educator Chris Liepe and I
found out when we started looking at what was out there! We
discovered that most people are going about trying to train their
ear all wrong! You can't treat ear training like a set of drills
or sink into traditional course methods. You have to re-order
the way you think and let your ear drive your playing by focusing
on rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Believe it or not, with the
right approach, this is incredibly easy to do!
